Proof The Filipinos Are MMORPG Addicts
Aside from seeing those kiddies playing in the PC shops, you’ll also see them winning “Global tournaments.”
The Philippine team took the top prize at the recently held RAN Online Global Tournament, beating Malaysia, Hong Kong, Thailand, Korea and Taiwan. - Inquirer

Yet another proof of how gaming has enticed many Pinoys.
Now, when is the next DOTA tournament?

Ateneo, La Salle and the Drama of the Game
Chris Tiu is not a human being.
That was the rumor. He is a robot or an android from another planet. He is too good to be real. Smart, handsome, rich, famous and one of the top gunners for the Ateneo basketball team. He is, in the thoughts of many alumni, the epitome of a true Atenean.
Would it have been a surprise, then, that he looked agitated when he scored only 2 points in the first game for his Alma Mater? It the crucial first-of-three in the championship series? Did he just let his school down?
Mind focused, he came into game two with a Lion’s heart.
“I spent more than half of the game on the bench because of foul trouble and scored only 2 points. Well, I think i got too excited and i wasn’t able to adjust to the calls. - Chris Tiu (from his supposed blog).
Sixteen points later, he walked the court with a sigh and a smile.
Ateneo finally ended years of disappointment with a 62-51 victory over La Salle last night as the Blue Eagles were crowned UAAP champions once more before a joyous crowd at the Araneta Coliseum. - Philippine Star.
And what a game it was. Grown men became children who shouted in passionate flare. Adults with grudges threw insults at each other and at the officials of the game. For a few hours, people forgot themselves in a sea of emotion. Yeah, that’s College Basketball.

The fiery rivalry came forth last night. Ateneo and La Salle, school rivals, sent forth their players, pleased the crowd, and gave a show.

For Ateneo, whose last championship was in 2002, it was redemption over the last few years. They almost made it to the end twice, only to be bumped off by UST and La Salle. The team was reborn this year and crashed through the season with only one loss. Norman black’s collapsing defense formula and the towering front line were unbeatable.
For La Salle, with its proud basketball history, it was a stinging end. They would not just bow out without a final say:
This is the worst officiating I’ve seen for a championship. It’s like giving the trophy to them - Pumaren.
For Chris, it was their time to shine.
His two free throws, a three-pointer, and a runner helped the Eagles extend a 20-17 lead to a 27-17 bubble at the 7:53 mark of the second quarter, the first time the lead breached the 10-point barrier.
Later Tiu scored on a drive, part of an 8-0 run that shot the Eagles in front 41-26 at halftime. - GMA News.
His archrival, Casio, hit five three-pointers to spark the Archers and end the third quarter at 50-47. But it wasn’t enough. Tiu’s team mates stepped up. Defense became stiff.
By the end of the game, the numbers on the board displayed:

And Chris Tiu, along with Jobe, Fr. Ben Nebres and the rest of the Ateneo community, would celebrate a thanksgiving mass.

Thus ends the drama of another UAAP basketball season.

You, Pinoy Blogger, the New Power
The Philippine Blog Awards
Looking a the winners of the 2008 Philippine blog awards last Sunday, I see a lot of new bloggers (and recognize many of the old ones. It is refreshing to see this push through. The first blog awards was held on March 2007. This time around, the event was on a September, on the third quarter of 2008. A full year-and-a-half later.
You’ll also notice that the organizers lacked one notable blogger -Abe Olandres, who was very prominent in the first awarding ceremonies. It appears Abe is quite busy now and is now more focused on his blogging business. I, for one, understand how that is. I used to blog daily. Now, with all the work I do at the office, I hardly have time to write anything.
What you probably don’t know is that there was once a “blogging mafia” - well that’s how I fondly recall it. We used to regularly bunch together for evening rendezvous and videoke sessions. I sincerely miss those days. We’d blog about the what’s going on around. We’d have fun. In our own way, we were also influencing what’s goes on, at least on the Philippine Tech scene.
These days, it seems we’re a bit more serious. I consider thePhilippine Blogging Awards a something like an Eraserheads concert reunion. It was a get-together of old friends. (Even though I wasn’t there - Sorry guys. Ateneo-Lasalle game took priority). It goes to show that, if you REALLY want it, you’ll find a way. On that, a hat tip to the event organizers.
From Coy:
The blogging awards came just after the latest “blogger feeding program” (as Aileen jokingly puts it), Oktoberfest for Bloggers. I missed this one, but I was present (and was a speaker) at Wordcamp Philippines 2008.
Filipinos Are Online Social Animals
These events reinforce the notion that Pinoys are social networkers. We love to interact, both offline and online. The internet has provided a venue to efficiently connect. We have have proved willing lab-rats for this live social experiment.
It is anyone’s guess where Philippine blogging will lead to. One thing is certain, more and more Pinoys are blogging. More and more people talk about what’s on their minds. We are all nurturing the seeds to a different kind of revolution. As kids become techno-savvy and internet access gets even cheaper, online democracy grows stronger.
The Strength Of Bloggers
Eventually, bloggers will be a new power block - the new El Shaddai or Iglesia ni Cristo of the political arena. Every time we move as one, we’d get things done.
Need evidence? Just consider what Philippine bloggers have, through one way on another, achieved:
- Paypal in the Philippines
- Western Union Payments on Adsense
- Blogging Awards, Events
Tess has a nice summary at what has happened last year (2007). Look at that at you’ll see what I mean.
Yes, you bloggers have contributed to that. Just talking about the issue, just BLOGGING about it, give you power. It is the power of spreading ideas.
And you know what? Government, businesses and the old media should take notice. There is a new animal around. Something that the old politicians don’t control. It’s lurking the social and political jungles ready to pounce on new issues.

Mike Villar: The Man, The Legend, The Rising Internet Superstar!
Despite what you read on his blog, he is a pretty decent fellow. On his serious days, he earns his company the equivalent value of 10-15 Mac book Pros per day. On low days, he’s sleeping on the couch.
The website just a venue for his insecurities and whims. Consider it online entertainment. Mike Villar is the main actor of his own comedy show - his blog. His rants and musings are just that - something to keep us awake on sleepy late evenings like Jay Leno or David Letterman.
Ignore the vulgarities and just laugh at life. Laugh at Mike Villar. So, as my colleague Riz has voted, I too am voting.
Now Mikey, where’s our beer and pizza?
