Making A Difference In The World
I had a rather nice talk this afternoon in my regular seminars. One of the topics I discussed was Starting with Why: How Great Leaders inspire. It was borne out of TED talk by Simon Sinek:
As I browsed through Sinek’s profile, I saw this short note about him:
His earliest work was in advertising, moving on to start Sinek Partners in 2002, but he suddenly lost his passion despite earning solid income. Through his struggle to rediscover his excitement about life and work, he made some profound realizations and began his helping his friends and their friends to find their “why”.
Which makes me wonder my own WHY in the world.
As a young kid I’ve always felt I’d make a difference somehow. Yet as High school and College went by, basic necessities took over. I needed to find a good job that paid well and simply be content.
Well it turns out there’s something missing.
I see Paul Bloom’s talk interpreted in a youtube RSA Animate video:
The key points are, people are motivated to do creative, high-level cognitive tasks when there is:
- Autonomy
- Mastery
- Purpose
I see that word, PURPOSE and how it ties in directly to finding your/my WHY in this world.
Think about that – Why do you do what you do? What drives you?
Interesting enough there’s a nice framework used in Psychotherapy that goes like this:
1. Imagine all your problems were solved by some miracle overnight.
2. When you wake up in the morning, what’s the first sign you would see to know things have changed?
3. Key Question: When was the last time you saw or felt this?
Then I think back at all my personal glory days. I remember which events were my high points – the victory moments.
I’d like to do those again and then grow better at it. As Paul Bloom Says – “Autonomy, Mastery & Purpose”. I want to be free. Yet I also want to grow in the field I love. Be a master at it.
Wouldn’t you?
Think about your personal WHY. What motivates you?
Me – I want to make a positive difference in the world somehow.
And this MARKS the official PIVOT to this blog.
Instead of just writing something for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and traffic (Which I used to do), I’ll just focus on what makes a difference. Everybody else is already talking about food, places, gadgets & technology. Why not talk about all these but in a purposeful manner? Make a change – even if just through writing.
Even if it’s just in a blog.
Hello reader. Thanks for dropping by. Wanna make a difference today?
