Compartmentalized Skills. Are you really…

Compartmentalized Skills. Are you really happy with that?

What do I mean? You're a designer. All you do is design. You photoshoped your career away.

Or a copy editor/writer. Your days are filled with text - and maybe some red strikethroughs or Microsoft word tracking.

Or a project management officer. You're an expert at juggling resources to achieve tasks.

If you've been doing all these repetitively all your life, where's your growth? Are you still happy?

On management's end, you've compartmentalized your people into various departments. They do the same tasks over and over again. Now, if there's a bottleneck somewhere, what are the other people doing? Wouldn't it have been more productive if others helped out in some way?

I'm not talking about throwing people's expertise away. No, that's still important. People have to be known for something - for a special set of skills. However, if corporate bottlenecks hold up the design team, wouldn't it have been great if some of the other teams can help out? Even those who know a little bit of Photo shop could help - under the supervision of the designers, of course.

There is danger here, some might say. What if they only become hindrances? The people who help become obstacles?

What if they don't? What if the other teams really provide value? A 1 year project might have been completed faster.

I don't know. I'm just asking. Maybe there's some logic there somewhere.
