Adjusting Feedback. Have you heard of it…
Adjusting Feedback. Have you heard of it?
I first heard the term while I was listening to the manager tools podcast. It somewhat goes like this – Invest in a relationship with your employees and provide feedback. The kind the helps them adjust to the requirements of the task or output. The relationship is important, as it will determine whether people will do a task heartily or with disdain.
Adjusting feedback is applied when tasks are viewed as insufficient (by the manager). As a manager, you just tell your staff, in an emphatic yet unbiased manner, to improve their work.
“You did a CRAPPY job. Get better. Damn it!” A manager can shout this. Right after it, have a few beers and share funny anecdotes. It can only be done in a trusting and healthy office relationship. If it was effective, then sanctions would not be required.
Unfortunately, not all managers subscribe to this belief. Sometimes, new policies and rules are simply enforced without the sufficient context. Impose a restriction on web browsing. Require them to use this and that tool.
It’s a rather simplistic approach.
Sometimes, we seem to live in a work culture where manager’s rule like warlords. Follow me or suffer the consequences! Motivation by fear.
Unfortunately, that doesn’t always work.
