When You Can’t Just Write About Anything Anymore

My brows knotted. My heart palpitated.

Frustrated and stressed. That's how I felt.

I sometimes lose subscribers from either twitter or from this blog. I often just let it pass. Last week though, I was surprisingly annoyed. Who knew that a simple unsubscribe would be so ego-piercing?

I have utterly have no claim to fame yet. Somehow though, I feel extremely pressured. I feel like a hen needing to lay an egg soon. Either that or I'm dinner.

Is this writer's block?

When I wrote a short blip totally unrelated to my core topics - marketing, technology, entrepreneurship and user experience, some people unsubscribed. Three people. At the same time.

Normally I wouldn't care. Normally.

Now I JUST can't write. Is this a curse or what?

My other self:

I've concluded that you've reached a certain point in your writing when your audience expects a certain level from you. Your readers are familiar with your writing style. They're accustomed to your topics.

Going extremely beyond that - like a quick twit about Star Wars, which is not your regular field of discussion, turns them away.

What the hell is that?!

I'm suddenly like an Obama who's not allowed to use a blackberry anymore. I'm just an ordinary bloke who happens to like sharing personal thoughts - usually about marketing and tech. Now I write something else you just leave?

Just when I had grandeur "fan club" dreams.

Yeah you play with your free will.

I'll play with mine.

Viola! Another totally marketing-unrelated post for ya'll.

And Obama still has a blackberry.

  1. isn’t it a responsibility to be true to what we feel? i still haven’t unsubscribed. :)

  2. my problem naman is that sometimes i think of an idea good enough to blog about, only to find out that i already blogged about it in the past. PHAIL !

nakakatamad naman magsearch sa sariling blog to find out if i already wrote about it.

akala mo new idea, yun pala, it’s just an idea that resurfaced from a previous point in time. ngek !

and i’ll be happy if my subscribers reach 10. right now it’s 6, pero total of 3 blogs yun… so 2 each..wahhh!!!

  3. JayDj, thanks for the perspective change. LOL.

  4. Let’s turn the tables: do you really want subscribers who unsubscribe on a whim? Are *they* your target market?

Nobody can’t please everyone, as you know.

  5. Dude, just remember why you blog/twit etc then think hard about why you were/are really pissed.

Are these ‘subscribers’ that left really that important to you?

  6. @mike @Eugene: Yeah this is probably just me being overly sensitive and typically uninspired these days.
