How To Earn $463.83 While Bumming Around

Devilkin, as his online multi-player game friends would know him, is a bit of a bum. Over half of his day is spent on playing Massive Multi-player Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG). What his friends don’t know is that he also earns a bit of income – through blogging.

Like many young Filipinos today, Devilkin discovered a new kind of job. Something that doesn’t require him to be in an office and includes a task he can work on part-time. He writes on a web log (blog).

A blog (a contraction of the term weblog) is a website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. “Blog” can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.

Filipinos like Devilkin have discovered that by writing on a blog and renting out advertising space through Google.com’s Adsense system, he could earn a bit and yet enjoy his simple lifestyle.

At the local Western Union branch a few blocks away from his house, he lined up to get his first Adsense payment. As he waited for his turn, Delvinkin appeared jittery.

“Kuya, pano ba to? (Bro, how does this go?)” he asked while filling up the Western Union money pick-up form.

The Guard and the receptionist explained to him how it worked. A few minutes later, he walked away with cash tucked in a brown envelop in his bag.

Blogging is enticing as it doesn’t require an all day commitment. Devilkin’s daily routine goes something like this – he wakes up at around 9AM. He opens the computer and browses to one of his technology blogs. Then he writes. Devilkin does a bit of initial research online but finds that the real wealth of information is found off-line.

“Penge ng brochure.(Can I get a brochure?)” he’d ask companies or booths in trade shows.

Devilkin saves all the materials he collects. He rewrites the brochure’s marketing jargon into something just apt for his blog. The task takes around two hours every morning. By lunchtime, he’d be done. This leaves him free to enjoy the gaming life in the afternoons and evenings.

How much does he earn? Daily blogging profits range from $0.50 to $5.00 per day. In the past six months since Devilkin started blogging, he totaled $463.83.

It’s not the best of all numbers but it’s not bad for a newbie.

He does all this while still playing (a free-server of) World of Warcraft (WOW).

TIP: Interested in blogging yourself? Start simple. Start an account with Blogger.com and then write a couple of articles. Add Adsense ads into your blog. When you get more than 20 articles, think about getting your own blog with a personal domain name. Get webhosting (alternative web host) and write away.
