Philippine Semiconductor Businesses Are Hurting
I remember being told that our semiconductor industry was one of the healthiest in Asia. We exported many electrical components. With the downturn of the US economy, few people are buying electronics and computers.
The result? A glaring SHUTDOWN of the Intel plant in Cavite and the slowdown of the industry:
Compounding the looming problem is the five percent decline in revenues in 2008 in the local semiconductor industry.
Data from the National Statistics Office () showed that the Philippine electronics product export was down 17 percent as of November 2008, from a high of $2.429 billion in November 2007 to $2.017 billion.
Will the industry recover?
