Sky Broadband Speedtest: Is it Really Fast?
With my relocation from Antipolo City to Pasig, I’ve decided to get a fast internet connection. Seeing the new Sky Broadband internet ads, I was intrigued. I’ve decided to try it out.
My first test on Sky Broadband:

Next Speed Test

Almost 6MB going down and around 500-800 KB/S going up. I subscribed to the 6MBPS plan.

Not bad at all. What does a 6MBPs plan mean? I should be able to watch Youtube clips without the usual waiting time. I tried watching this Marvel-DC clip:
Well, it loaded faster than what I was used to.
When I checked SpeedTest.net, the average bandwidth speed for the entire Philippines is 2MBPs.
Looks like I’m well above average for now.

nakakainggit naman… sana magkaron ng sky broadband sa area naman dahil ganito lang nag speed na nakukuha ko… http://www.speedtest.net/result/389405693.png noon naman hindi ganito
Yeah. Sky Broadband is still limited to certain areas. I’m one of the lucky ones.
How’s your torrent downloads? A lot of subscribers have problems downloading files using torrent.
No problem at all. :)
magkano per month yang 6mbps na connection mo?
4K
I’m curious, does it have a bond for like 1 year?
TOrrent Problems? I am planning to change it to Sky 12mpbs, ayala alabang,
But some people say that there are a lot of downtimes. Can you tell me how often it is?
No torrent problems really. When I started there were down times. After they fixed something (in our village), it’s been pretty consistent. 3 months with pretty solid internet access. They also didn’t charge me for the days the net was down.
I seem to notice it slow down at the evenings – 8 to midnight.
Do you think Ayala Alabang has a lot of downtimes? I really need to know this because, I ‘m getting a new internet connection for having a high grade.
Oh and can you tell me how fast you download (not speedtests)
That would be very helpful, Thanx
Depends on the torrent download. For something like “Slumdog Millionaire” when it was talk at the Oscars, it took me one hour to download the entire movie (around 700mb). Most times, it’ll be around 4-6 hours. In general, movies can be downloaded overnight.
Torrent? Torrent download sucks kahit nasaan ka mabagal ang torrent because it’s peer-to-peer networking. Have you tried downloading movies from USENET or Newsgroups? With your current 6mb/s download speed, downloading a DVD image (4.7 GB) from newsgroups would only take 1 hour or less. It’s also FREE. Just ask your ISP for their newsgroup server address.
It all depends on how many skybroadband subscribers there are in your area. Since cable internet is a shared internet among many users the more users there are on the internet at a give time (normally at night 8 -12 mn) the slower your connection. Sky advertises speeds “UP TO” meaning during the hours of the day where no one is home your speeds may reach really high speeds, but when everyone gets home your internet speed may reduce to half of what you are paying for. So, if you think there are a lot of sky users in your area and if there are very little servers of sky in your area you are better of with dsl so long as you are within at least 4kms of the pldt office. Hope this helps you guys decide well. As for Ayala Alabang there is no problem with skybroadband, since it is part of the elite villages sky invested a good deal in the servers they have there just like over here in makati (Dasma, Forbes, and the like). Mabuhay!
hi,
that 8 to 12 mn window was a huge con to me. i was choosing between pldt dsl and skybroadband before. I chose pldt because most people said it was more consistent. and indeed, it had consistently high speeds, sometimes even reaching more than 3mbps. upload speeds are always consistently high too. so if you soon find out that there are problems with your skybroadband, i highly suggest you go for pldt’s dsl. good day and let the torrent downloading begin!
YES.. YOUR RIGHT MJA PLDT IS THE BEST, BUT SKYBROADBAND I REALLY REALLY… REGRET BECAUSE WE SUBCRIBE 3 MBPS W/CATV BUT IM NOT HAPPY.., COZ ITS VERY SLOW SUPER BAGAL SOBRA… SA COMMERCIAL LNG SILA MAGALING
BWESET… SKYBROADBAND
Anybody knows if Skybroadband and SmartBro in Kapitolyo Pasig area is reliable?
I’m moving there soon and would like to know if I should change my SmartBro to Sky?
There’s a 15 day trial offered by Sky that I might try..
http://www.skybroadband.com.ph/
Well I live just in Kawilihan village, Pasig. 15 minutes away from Kapitolyo. We have Sky and that’s the speed there in the post.
Sure, SkyBroadband’s GREAT with downloads, even with torrents based on my experience.
But if you’re a hardcore gamer like me, this is definitely NOT for you. I mean, the ping in the speedtests above are similar to mine and believe me, playing a simple online game is HELL. Gaming becomes an atrocious experience meant to be hated.
Yeah, don’t get sky broadband for gaming – as the ping rates aren’t too good.
I played guild-wars and had to settle on an “uncrowded” international server.
Whew,, so hard to decide if will continue my interest in skybroadband because of so many negative comments, *sigh*
I am a very unsatisfed SKY Broadband subscriber. Everything was fine the first and second month….NO PROBLEMS. But then I started having trouble. I am only subscribed to their 3 mbps plan. the problems i started to have were slow downloads, after that i started to experience intermittent loss of connection on a nightly basis. To top it all off, I started to experience problems with downloading form sites such as hotfile.com, rapidshare.com and megaupload.com. I just want to clarify that i UNDERSTAND the meanings of static/dynamic IP and that these sites have limits for free users. Whenever I would try to download from one of theses sites, it would always say that I cannot download since I have a parallel download or I have reached the hourly limit – which is funny because I have not downloaded anything in 36 hours. the following is a reply from one of their customer service reps. “As per advised of our Network Administrator, a Static IP address will not
resolve the problem with Rapid Share. It is advisable that users have a
premium account for them to continuously avail of the services of Rapid
Share. This same goes with other file hosting sites such as Mega Upload,
Hot File.
”
I understand what she is trying to say, but again, as a free user I should be able to enjoy downloading until i reach the limit, BUT how do i reach the limit when i have not downloaded anything in 24 hours?
If i were you guys I wold go with Bayantel DSL… their customer service is MORE competent, nicer, their upload speed is at 700kbps or something (at SKY it is around 300 kbps – takes forever to upload)…AND I HAVE NEVER ENCOUNTERED THE PROBLEMS WITH BAYANTEL I HAVE ENCOUNTERED WITH SKY. (i know because I am currently subscribed to both of them)…next week i will do away with SKY and get the new Globe WiMax plan
Ever wondered why they relabeled their service from ZPdee to sky broadband? that’s because they are now getting their signal from bayantel, as opposed to when they were still ZPdee it was from PLDT. I got my connection when they were still ZPdee but since they switched, it has been a living hell for me when it comes to gamin (I play WoW).
NOTE: If Gamer = NO SKY BROADBAND
If not = Yes to sky
(although I have to admit, my torrenting is incredulously faster with sky)
Hmm…sky broadband not good for gamers? What’s good for us online gamers then?
the nice thing about broadband internet is that it gets cheaper each year**,
I also live in your area, and I’m researching on what broadband plan to get. Is your connection still good until now?
