Philippines: The Land of Texters And Social Networkers
You need proof that Pinoys are Social Networking addicts? Look no further. Inquirer reports a study by McCann:
The Philippines not only has the reputation as the texting capital of the world, with one billion text messages sent daily, but it also has the highest number of Internet users in the 16 to 64 age group who join social networking groups.
In Universal McCann’s study on social media Wave 3 report, the Philippines had the highest penetration of social networking among Internet users at 83.1 percent, compared with the global average of 57.5 percent.
This took me a bit by surprise. I knew we Filipinos loved to twitter, plurk, friendster and even facebook. I didn’t realize we had the “highest penetration.” What does that mean? It indicates that blogs are really becoming mainstream media. It means we Pinoys really love to interact online!
I guess, events like the Philippine Blog Awards and Oktoberfest For Bloggers are reflections of this subtle change in society.
Perhaps we’ll also soon see some changes in corporations and businesses as well. There is money in here. You just have to see and grab the opportunities that come by.
