Two Important Plugins That Wordpress Should Have By Default

With Wordcamp Philippines coming soon, I’ve decided to look back at my favorite CMS - Wordpress. If we consider UX and usability from the writer’s (or blogger’s) viewpoint, then there are two very important plug-ins that should come with a default installation:

  1. Instant Upgrade Plugin - regular security updates with WP come as easy as a snap with this plugin.
The InstantUpgrade plugin downloads the latest WordPress version from the WordPress server and unpacks it at your server. In the next step, it deletes all of your old WordPress files (except wp-content/ and wp-config.php) and puts the new files into your WordPress directory.

  2. One Click Auto Install Themes/Plugins - this nifty app allows blog authors to instantly install different themes and plugins.

It reduces the effort needed to install a plugin or a theme for wordpress to just one simple click. It’s excellent for admins, non-techies, people with restrictive firewalls, and just about anyone who uses wordpress and installs plugins and themes.

These are my top two plug-in picks. Whenever I install a new WP blog, I immediately include this two. What are your top Wordpress plugin picks - those you want installed by default?

The One-Click Plugin Upgrade is already available in WP 2.5. It’s not an auto-upgrade but one-click upgrade to prevent conflicting plugins from crashing your blog.

The WordPress Upgrade is also available but is made by 3rd party. Automattic would not release this built-in with WP because of security issues. The WP Auto-Upgrade requires you open up folders as write-enabled and could be a huge security problem.

Hey Ely! Thanks for plugging WordCamp Phils 2008! Speaking of plugins, there will be a plugin development contest that we will run before WordCamp. Watch out for the announcements! :)
