What Usually Happens To Developers Who Practice Search Engine Marketing?
Well, according to Benj and as shared by Riz:
“They usually become the black hatters.”
Last Saturday, Riz was asked to talk about SEO for the PHP Users Group of the Philippines (PHPUGPH). She asked me to help out in the talk. It was really just a bit of moral support for her. I talked about why companies should use Search Engine Marketing (SEM). Then I gave the two basic elements of SEO:
- On page optimization – anything that has to do with he web page itself. The html code and design.
- Off page optimization – refers to all other external factors that affect SEO. This usually refers to incoming links.
Riz summarized the SEO process from keywords research up to monitoring the campaign’s performance. I got a Starbucks mug from it. Thanks to PHPUGPH!

By, the way, I recommend the Professional Search Engine Optimization with PHP: A Developer’s Guide to SEO (SEO for DevelopersBook). This book has the following topics:
- Understand the criteria that influence search engine rankings
- Create keyword-rich URLs using PHP, Apache, and mod_rewrite
- Use HTTP Headers to properly indicate the status of web documents
- Create optimized content and cope with duplicate content effectively
- Avoid being the victim of black hat SEO techniques
- Understand and implement geo-targeting and cloaking
- Use site maps effectively—for users as well as search engines
- Create a search engine–friendly WordPress blog
- Build a search engine–friendly e-commerce catalog

About black hat SEO:
Black Hat search engine optimization is customarily defined as techniques that are used to get higher search rankings in an unethical manner. This usually involves trying to fool search engines to cause a page to rank higher. PHP coders seem to be better at these techniques since they know how to play around with the actual dynamics of a web page.

Black hatters? You don’t mean blackhat in terms of security do you?
Hey Freddie. Updated the post. Hope that answers your question.
Ah so they have borrowed the term from the security guys. Thanks for the clarification :)
Hi Freddie. Yes it’s a term taken from the security guys. :) Thanks for asking.
