I’m considering getting a MacBook Air by the end of this year (If I have enough money for it). The very first question that came to my mind was… “Is it worth it?”

Then I came across a post by David of 37signals (The guys who are known for Ruby On Rails and Basecamp):

I’ve now been using the Air for some time as my only laptop. The Pro still hasn’t left the desktop and I doubt it ever will while I own it. My girlfriend replaced her regular MacBook with an Air as well. The verdict after extended use? L-o-v-i-n-g it. Both of us.

John Gruber (a popular Apple Technical Writer), also points out:

…the MacBook Air is like a sporty convertible coupe. You buy one not for practical reasons, but because it is satisfying to own something beautiful and clever and fun.

You see, critics thought that the Macbook Air would just be a secondary machine. You’d buy a different ‘first computer’ and have this little gadget as backup. This is due, mainly, to the perceived technical limitations of the MacBook Air (no CD drive and all that).

Techies are saying, go for the Lenovo/Thinkpad X300 instead.

It has really good features and a better price tag with the 64GB SSD which is around 2,500 USD to 2,800 USD than that of the MacBook Air with the 64GB SSD.

But do people really care about the specs that much? Isn’t it ok to just have a really cool-looking machine that can pretty much do essential computing tasks?

Personally, I’m not decided yet. If you had the money, would you buy a Macbook Air?

If I had the disposable cash, yes. I doubt I can do serious development on it with a 4200 RPM hard drive.

Since DHH got the SSD option, he can easily do Rails - which may fit in memory for him.

Wow SSD. Waayyy tooo expensive.

Well, I had this macbook just december last year. I was excited before I had it … but I guess, I am really fit to using windows … one thing and just one thing that got me heart broken … its yahoo messenger … doesnt have a sent to many option like the yahoo messenger on windows …
About the hardware, it doesn’t have a card reader (like my old Toshiba laptop who is much cheaper).

I was just plainly broken hearted …. and my answer to your question “Would you buy a MacBook Air?” === NO!

Right now, I am saving money to buy a new laptop that has built in windows in it … even if its cheap … I care less about the hardware since I already have almost everything on my other laptop, I just want something small and windows that I could carry everyday and use it in the office.
