Last month was the second-time this year I tested and changed my web site’s theme. Like the first time (early this year), I found my Adsense income drop by half.

It hurt.

And again, like before, the Adsense income went back to my original average figures as my theme testing ended.

It’s interesting that this happens despite how I keep my original Adsense positions. Other than the side bar, you won’t see any other Adsense Ad on my home page. My other ad location comes up at the top of individual posts, just under the title. I adopted this strategy because:

  • I didn’t want to bug my regular visitors with ads. If they come to my home page, I respect them enough to actually want to read the latest posts.
  • It also limits the number of times my Ad is shown and eventually increase my Clickthrough rates (CTR). Remember CTR is the ratio of clicks over impressions. The less impressions compared to clicks, the higher CTR.
  • New visitors tend to click on the ads more compared to the regulars. Most of the time they land on the individual post, where my top ads are, and not the home page.

Despite keeping those regular ad spots my Adsense income went down 50%. My testing lasted for around two weeks and my earnings went significantly down at that time.

That has happened twice this year.

I therefore conclude that too much theme-switching kills adsense.

I’ve tried to create my theme and format in a form that will stay as-is from the very beginning, as I’m relying on repeat customers, although search engine traffic is where the $$$ is at.
