Backlinks are the citations from other websites that point to your website. Conventional wisdom tells us that the more relevant backlinks we have for our target keywords, the more likely we are to rank high on search engine results for those terms. For instance, if a lot of people linked to your website for the term “widgets” there is a good chance that they will find your site for a Google search of “widgets”.
There are many online tools out on the web that could tell you about your backlinks. I personally prefer a Mozilla add on called SEOpen. Once I’ve installed it in my browser, I could go and check at a competitor’s website and check the backlinks by right clicking on the the web page. A menu shows up and I could select mass check-backlinks.

Three tabs open up and show me all the sites linking to that page.
It’s a great tool to quickly gauge the competition. If you use Firefox, I advise you to install it.
