Inquirer’s Own Youtube

Hey did you guys notice that Inquirer Philippines, the online arm of the local newspaper, has rolled out a video service in partnership with Yahoo Video. It’s called Inquirer VDO. Smart move for the company.

Instead of trying to create it’s own video database and support it with it’s own infrastructure like the old pinoytube (which is now pinoywebcast), the newspaper company opted to use it’s brand in conjunction with another popular brand, Yahoo. Really, why reinvent the wheel? Just use your brand and partner with those who are already good at it, right? I wonder how they make money out of it? Do they share revenue on ads?

Question is, why didn’t they try to partner with Youtube (now owned by Google), the grandaddy of all online video sharing? I wonder now, with the breakup of inq7.net, will GMANews.tv start something similar?

And where’s that other popular TV company, ABSCBN, in all of this?

I read that the Inquirer writers are now also going into blogging. At the last iBlog3 conference, this was one of the discussion topics. It seems to me that the guys at Inquirer.net seem to be pretty open-minded to new technology. They are actually catching up with their US media counterparts.

So far, the videos in Inquirer VDO look quite newsworthy and actually interesting to look at. Here’s a sampler.
