Gail says “Netrepreneurs are cursed.” She notes:

…You can?t just forget about your job when you?re at home, because your job is at home.

Netrepreneurs, or Internet Entrepreneurs, are the new breed of businessmen/women. Work is done at home and business is coursed through the Internet. Some may think this is really cool but there are difficulties with this kind of setup. Gail already notes one - you can’t get your mind off work. Instead of a cozy, relaxing place, your home becomes a stress zone.

My mother, a seamstress, can relate to this. She works on women’s clothes and when she has a ‘rush’ job, she really gets tense. It gets so bad sometimes that any one small irritation can make her explode. She’d go mad over trivial things. I didn’t understand it then. Now I know - it’s the stress of working at home.

I have a different problem. For me, There are too many distractions at home. My brothers would play the PS2 when I work at the dinner table. We all know that television and video games can really take up one’s attention. I might want to work on this project now, but when I’m hit by a mental block, the call of entertainment beckons. All of a sudden 4 hours have already passed. Ack! That simply can’t do.

So how do you solve these netrepreneur curses?

My friend’s mother had a simple solution. She made a home office.

What is a home office? It’s one of the rooms in the house where she would label as the “work zone”. Preferably, it should be somewhere relatively quiet. The place should be far from distractions and noise. There, you have your computer, your desk, your pencils, ballpens, folders, staplers…etc. It’s your own workplace. If presentable enough, it can even be small meeting venue for clients.

Here’s how it could possibly look like (from DLGallerygifts.com):

My current office is just like this. It works quite well for me.

Having a home office puts a mental separation of work and home. You can get stressed in your own home office but when it gets too much, just get out of your room. When you’re ready, just go back and face work head on!

Yeah, I read about this, and it does work wonders :D

Gusto ko yung ganung furniture and room! haaaay…. tagal pa… hahaha :P

since i do a lot of working from home as well, i made it a point to set up one of the rooms in my house as a HOME OFFICE. it helps if you dedicate a specific space that will allow you to physically, mentally and audibly (least maingay part of the house) condition yourself for work.

Rule of thumb
Rule #1 get a PROPER workstation/desk . malaking bagay and tunay na desk for work- not just some bullshit you put together na pwedeng patungan ng puter. proper desk includes a proper filing system, filing cabinet for records, and a shredder!
Rule #2 … NO TV in the office. a TV is just WAAAAAY to tempting. If my work room (which i have dubbed my chinese brothel due to its red and black paint job) i would probably end up playing video games most of the time… or watching porn, or playing porn video games… you get the idea.
Rule #3. close the door when working. inform people that you ARE working. and ACTUALLY DO WORK based on a work schedule that is both realistic and productive… and not just surf for bullshit (which i tend to do.)
.

your office looks like that?? whoa. sooo… posh. :P gusto ko rin haha :)

@Mae: Start your own home office!
@Mike: Eya, nice to see ya up and about man! How’s the latest project shaping up?
@Riz: Oooppss! Not EXACTLY like that. We’re in container van (converted into an office) outside the house. It does have a wood-finish look as well.

A home office will definitely help keep you sane. But it still depends on your self-discipline if you will really get some job done since the Internet is one big tempting thing. :-_

Hi Alfa! I’m honored to see you comment on my blog. :D So how do you work at home? You have a home office too?
