Reasons Why You Should Network

This is not Multi-Level Marketing (MLM). When I refer to networking, I mean the process of meeting and remembering new people. Ever since I read the 'Tipping Point' book of Malcom Gladwell, it has been the single most important lesson that has been ingrained in me. I remember it everytime I go out to parties and mix in with the crowds.

Why is it important to Network? I thought about this and found some important reasons why I do so:

  • Potential Clients - There is always that chance to meet a client that would help push your business. Networking gives one an insight into what other people do, and perhaps how your business could fit into their needs.
  • Business Partners - You'll never realize how small the world can be and how similar people's interests are. When you talk with people regarding business matters, they sometimes have a business model that already works, or even the financing to back it up. Yet, they might need something that you already have. From an entrepreneurial point of view, there is always an opportunity to form business alliances.
  • Unknown Friends - I have met a couiple of very good and talented friends over the course of my networking. They have given me insights on some very different points of view. I may not need to agree with them, but I can respect their position.

I think the main reason you need to network is that you are opened to a whole new world of contacts. Personally, I can now get in touch with people in Government or in the higher corporate circles - areas I didn't think I could reach before.

Sometimes you can even actually help people. Some of my friends now come to me and ask "Hey do you know someone who does this..."

... and I can pretty much give them a referral. I've become a connector of sorts.

That kind of ability, to give people a personal referral or a contact, is pretty priceless. It's like you've gained a much wider circle of influence. It is quite intoxicating at times.

I can pretty much say that it was through networking that I was able to emcee the SEO Philippines Awarding ceremonies. It was through networking that I got a chance to interview Aileen of Google Philippines, and talk to Abe, Gail, and many others in the local tech scene.

I even venture to say that I've had job offers and projects because of networking.

I wasn't this social animal before. Now I appreciate it and wish I had done this even way back in College.

It's really not too hard. Just smile, introduce yourself and ask "What do you do?" Try to follow the 3-second rule. When you see someone you would like to meet, do it within three seconds. Don't hesitate. Don't think about it. Just do it. If you go beyond three seconds, you might become shy.

Yes as the Nike Ads go. "Just Do It."
