How Does Google Find a Needle In The Internet Haystack?
This interesting article just gave me an mathematical view of how Google might work. I find it too statistical but it does try to explain how Google’s PageRank technology evaluates the importance and ranking of websites.
I’d like to put it in human terms. Let’s say you are a carpenter – a very good one who has gained a respectable reputation among your personal friends. If someone was looking for a carpenter and a lot of people referred you, then you should be among the top carpenters. Good for you! You should be getting a lot of work and income!
Let’s say an extremely rich and well-known businessman suddenly refers another carpenter(Your competition). He’s the only one referring this carpenter but people listen to him.
Who should rank higher? You, with a lot of referrals from not-so-famous friends? Or your competition, who has a referral from one very rich and popular businessman?
In Internet technology terms, that is what Google is trying to figure out. Mathematics and Statistics play a part on Google’s secret algorithm to rank which web pages should come out on the first page of Search Results.
It’s interesting how the article looks at this connection between websites to show how Google’s PageRank Algorithm might look like.
