… that was the rather innocent question I asked the SEO Philippines group. I was really just venting out a frustration. It triggered quite a hot discussion from the local bloggers. Apparently, it is a long standing issue. A domain name on dotPH costs US$35 a year.? A domain name in GoDaddy can go as low as US$10. DotPH, for those who don’t know, controls all those websites that end with? com.ph on it.
See what Angelo Racoma and Abe Olandres says about it.
The answer, is really simple. DotPH is a monopoly. Monopolies get to DO this because can.
Markku suggests that we all should do something about it. Harness our SEO skill to help drive DotPH prices down. Make ICANN, the Internet registrar guys, notice what’s happening.
Don’t you just love it when you can make SEO an advocacy?
I’m up to it. Want to target the keywords “Philippine Domain Registration”?
.. that leads to website that says “DotPH is a monopoly. ICANN do something!”
Is there a pun there somewhere?

That’s too easy a keyword.
Target “philippines”.

I live in the U.S. so we are all about the .com. What is the advantage of getting one of the country specific ones like .com.ph? Is it just the greater availability of good domain names? Or is there something beneficial in the localization of it?

What are the benefits and advantages of getting a dotPH domain compared with generic ones (.com, .net, etc.)?

dotPH domains are not cheap. It just turns out that some PHlippine companies get dotPH domains because the regular dot com domain is taken. Advantage? It seems that Google appreciates local domains for regional sites. SO if you are targeting a local, philippine market, you would presumambly rank better in Google when you market your site. I have yet to see proof of this, though.

Yes! Let the googling bombing begin. Down with the Disini monopoly.

Unfortunately, the Disini Google Bombing plan wasn’t accepted by the SEO Philippines people They didn’t think it was worth the hassle.

Yeah. Most of the People I talk to, however, would simply say… Don’t buy .ph domains. That’s it.

What we need is to support the government in taking back DotPH from the private company. In the first place, DotPH is the country’s “domain name”. Let the Filipino people benefit from it and not some private corporation.
And regarding google favoring country-domains, if you are using the format .TLD.CD (country-domain), you are out of luck. From what Ive read elsewhere, google favors .TLD and .CD. So if you use .CD instead of .TLD.CD, you’ll rank better.
So .ph is better in the eyes of Google than .com.ph .net.ph .org.ph .edu.ph .gov.ph .biz.ph .info.ph etc.
(No, there are no .ws.ph :p hehe… .ws is a country-domain too.)
