Challenges to Financial Savings

It’s really hard to save up money when you’ve got people relying on you. That seems the be the curse of kuyas (elder brothers) in the Philippines. There seems to be an unsaid rule that says “Give money back to the family.” I’m a kuya, and this rule can sometimes really get annoying.
This week, for instance, my mother has been complaining about how she didn’t get the money she was expecting. Because of her financial issues, my little brother’s monthly tuition fees are affected. Over dinner last weekend, she kept talking about it.
Now, I know she wasn’t really asking me for money. She just needed to vent out her financial woes. (I am actually used to women telling me their problems. Somehow, they think I’m a good listener. What they don’t know is that I, at times, find their woes quite stressful too.)
Eventually, I just asked. “How much money do you need?” She gave me a figure and I just said “I’ll take care of it.”
I jus thought to myself, “Sometimes, we’ve just got to make hard decisions.” This affects me financially but it, at least, helps my little brother’s education.
Saving up money can be challenging.
