Home-made Aircons for sale?

With summer and the heat pouncing up on all us poor pinoys, you might just want to consider starting your own home made aircon business. No, it’s not like those “spray-fans” that you’ll see on EastWoord, Libis, Quezon City. This one is quite unique.

First, let’s talk about the weather. It’s really just about the tail-end of summer here in Manila but the heat can still be quite excruciating. In Eastwood (a popular call-center business district in Manila) or in Tiendesitas, (a shopping popular shopping spot just along ortigas avenue extension), I see those “spray fans.” Do you know what they are? Ordinary electric fans rigged with a water tube that sprays a mist every minute or so. On a hot summer day, the cool mist is quite refreshing.

I’ve thought it would really be cool to have sell those kinds of devices on the consumer market. I wonder why no one has done that yet?

Then I saw this cool website form Geoff. He simply used:

  • large fan
  • garbage can
  • 25 feet of 1/4 inch outer diameter (OD) copper tubing (~ $14)
  • 20 feet of 1/4 inch inner diameter (ID) vinyl tubing (~ $6)
  • a package of zipties (~ $3)
  • 2 small hose clamps (~ $1)

I estimate the entire setup he created would be around US$40 (around P2,000) here in Manila. The cheapest air conditioner I’ve seen here is around P8,000 (US$160). Now if someone would just be enterprising enough to figure out someone marketable from all this, he/she would probably earn a pretty decent income.

Entrepreneurs! Do you see an opportunity here?
