Looking to hire someone? There are a couple of online job sites you could subscribe to for assistance. My company has been actively looking for PHP/MySql programmers. We browsed through jobsDB.com and found that there were many application developers listed there - mostly Visual Basic experts. This is not surprising since VB is pretty easy to use. It is however, limited to Microsoft Based Systems. Some of the potential employees mentioned other skills like C++, C# and Php — but only in passing. It appears that they’ve not concentrated on Php/MySQL itself. We were looking for were expert hardcore web coders.

JobsDb’s RMS

Unfortunately JobsDB wasn’t too helpful. There are actully two types of login for JobsDB - job-hunder and employer. We logged in our ‘employer’ account and saw a rather ‘unfriendly’ user interface. What do I mean by unfriendly? Well, the webpage login would pop-up another page. I find it really annoying when web applications do that without pre-informing the user. Their Recruitment Management System (RMS) presents a web-user interface that is not intuitive for a web-user. There are no hyperlinks. To issue commands on selected, highlighted areas, one has to click on a menu at the top of the window screen. I half-expected a right-mouse button click functionality to at least make it easier to use — there was no such thing.

How about the quality of candidate search results? We tried to search for candidates with ‘Php MySQL’ as keywords. Along with other criteria, such as years of work experience, and desired salary, and whether candidates are Philippine-based, the system returned only 2 results! This was rather surprising, we would have thought that JobsDB’s database would probably have around 10,000 entries and give us at least around 20-50 jobseekers.

We then tried another search with only ‘Php’ as a skill keyword. This gave us around 100 results. Apparently, the search algorithm of JobsDB looked for the exact word combination of ‘Php MySqL’ and was not intelligent enought to provide alternative search options or results. I might have expected too much from this.. getting used to Google and all. Still, the interface they had could’ve been much better.

Finally, I find it annoying that JobsDB is designed more for Internet Explorer and not really for other browsers. Their web application is not web standards compliant. The one month P5,000 subscription to them wasn’t worth it. My officemates told me that their experience with Jobstreet.com was much better.
