My cousin from the states once visited us and went to the Malls here. She exclaimed "There are so many people!"

Apparently, she was not used to this. To her, the mall was a simple, quiet shopping place. You’d see few shoppers moving about, not like the busy bustling people-filled malls of Manila.

You see, Metro Manila is Mall-country. Despite a population dominated by middle and lower-income earners, Filpinos still find a way to go to the Mall.

Sociologists explain that it is a form of escape from the troubles and hassles of society. To many here, it’s where you can grab a bite, watch a movie, go window shopping, or just get out of the hot, tropical weather to enjoy a cool air-conditioned environment.

In Makati, you have the Ayala Malls, Greenbelt, Landmark, Glorrieta and SM Mall all clumped up just beside the Ayala MRT station. Right along Edsa, Mandaluyong there is Shangrila, SM MegaMall, Robinson’s Galleria. At each of the ends of Edsa you have SM CIty and the newly-built SM Mall of Asia (which is considered to be Asia’s biggest mall, in terms of floor lease space available).

Scattered about around Metro Manila is SM Centerpoint (Which is supposedly located at the very middle point of Manila, thus the name), Sta. Lucia Mall, Metro East Mall and more SM malls.

As you can see the Shoemart (SM) malls of the Sy family dominate the area. You’ll recognize their stoic familiar buildings that seem to have been designed by only one architect. The exception to this is the SM Mall of Asia, which seems to have a more modern look.

A practical tip to foreigners visiting the PHilippine Malls, it is advisable to you go shopping in the morning (around 10-11am) when the malls are just opening up. Try to never go on paydays (generally the 15th and the end of every month) as the malls are usually very crowded.

Unfortunately, paydays are also when the malls give out big discounts and last up to 12 midnight. I guess you have to consider whether you are going for comfortable or cost-effective shopping.

Another tip to foreigners and definitely us pinoys, is the large number of pickpocketeers in malls and supermarkets. Different modus operandi, just waiting for the opportune time. Just had an experience last july 4. I learned too, that some of them are gays.
